A.J.Fedor
A.J. Fedor began playing the harmonica at about six or seven, and sixty years later, he's still playing. Completely self-taught; he never took a lesson. Not following the instructions that came in the box with every harmonica he ever got, made him an "undisciplined player." It was that very lack of discipline that has given him his unique sound. When one does something wrong, it's just wrong; but when the folks who think they get to make up all the rules realize that the guy made it work (and work well) it somehow becomes a "technique." Imagine that! The sound samples below will show you that he has a sound all his own.
As a kid, A.J. never went anywhere without his harmonica, and that's still pretty much the case. At around ten or eleven, he got his first Chromatic harmonica (that's the big one with the button :o) and he never looked back. Contrary to popular belief, A.J. is not as much "anti-diatonic" as he is "pro-Chromatic." A.J. feels that over the years, the Chromatic harmonica, for any number of reasons, has sadly taken a back seat to the diatonic. (that's the little one that Country and Blues players either play or just make noise with) A.J.'s quick to take full responsibility for coining the term: "suck-harp" back in 1999 when he started the world's only exclusively Chromatic harmonica discussion forum; "SlideMeister@E-Groups" which later became SlideMeister@YahooGroups" and finally his own site: Slidemeister.com back in 2006. SlideMeister started out amid much controversy due to A.J.'s absolute refusal to allow allow any diatonic discussion. The sharpness of contraversy that ensued caused some members to leave, saying the group would never amount to anything. Since that time, SlideMeister has become the busiest internet harmonica group of any kind and an international Chromatic success story.
Although almost militantly Chromatic, A.J. also plays and even teaches diatonic harmonica, and knowing that there are others with the occasional diatonic question, he recently added a small diatonic "sandbox" to SlideMeister.com. The slidemeister family has recently expanded to include SlideMeister.com, .net and .org. any of these URL's will take you to the main site and you can easily find your way around from there.
SlideMeister also boasts the largest collection of Chromatic players on one YouTube channel: SlideMeisters. Click it and see for yourself. No silly stuff, no animals, no babies in cribs blowing pablum into a harmonica; just real folks, from all over the planet; amateurs to professionals, playing as good as they can and having a lot of fun.
Back to the music part. Besides being his favorite instrument, A.J. believes the Chromatic harmonica is every bit as legitimate an instrument as any, and has pretty much dedicated the last 13 years of his life to promoting and furthering its acceptance in mainstream music.
